You are not holding anything together, just holding the plug in. Probably like 15 pound feet. I'm an auto mechanic, I don't think I have ever torqued a drain plug tho.. just keep in mind all you need to do is keep the plug from getting loose don't go all manly on it or you will probably just wreck the threads on the bolt, but you could strip out the pan and have to helicoil it. Put a new oil pan on, change the oil yourself or each time you have to change the oil, go to the same mech and make sure it doesn't get over tightened or striped. boomercarguy Report post Posted October 11, 2017 (edited) I bought my 2005 Escape with the 3.0 Duratec V6 and I discovered an oversize "repair" drain bolt in my oil pan which drips. I was going to tap new threads but there is a chunk of metal keeping me from using my tap. So I went online and discovered Eco-Plug which I'm going to try: http://yhst-137220973255828.stores.yahoo.net/test2.html I called them directly because I was concerned about the size taper going from 12mm to 16mm and my bolt is 12mm. Would it fit and if so, would it stick out too much? They said there are two lengths (not mentioned on the website), 3/4" and 1.5". They said to be sure to specify the 3/4" taper and it will fit perfectly. I'll let you know how it goes. UPDATE: I installed this Eco-Plug in the shorter 3/4" lenth exactly as per instructions. It worked perfectly. This company also makes non-repair replacements for aluminum and steel pans which replace the OEM bolt and prevent any possible future damage you or someone else may do to the threads.
